Real Salt is salt exactly as nature made it – and the best-selling sea salt in America’s health food stores. Recommended by medical professionals, fitness experts, and world-class chefs for its unique flavor and unrefined mineral content, Real Salt will make everything you eat taste better.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT REAL SALT

Millions of years ago an ancient ocean covered what is now the Western United States. As the earth shifted and ocean waters retreated beneath the surface, the Real Salt deposit formed into a massive, underground mountain of crystalized salt protected from erosion by a layer of volcanic ash.

AS NATURE INTENDED

We bring Real Salt to you exactly as nature created it: nothing added, nothing taken away. Real Salt is preferred by chefs for its delicious, subtle flavor and recommended by experts because of the unrefined minerals.

BRING OUT THE FLAVOR

Compared to typical sea salt, Real Salt has a smoother flavor profile – a subtle, salty sweetness that naturally enhances the flavor of every bite. Real Salt doesn’t make your food taste like salt, it enhances the flavors on your plate.

HOW TO USE IT

Use it just like you would a typical table salt.

Real Salt Ancient Fine Salt is Redmond's most popular grain size and can be used in any recipe or on top of any meal. When in doubt, opt for Fine Salt.

DOES REAL SALT EXPIRE?

Real Salt never expires. Real Salt doesn't expire, because natural salt without additives doesn't ever go bad.

Food only spoils when fungal, bacterial, yeast, or other microbial growth takes place. All of these require water. Salt doesn’t contain water, so it doesn’t support microbial growth, meaning it won’t spoil. In fact, salt is actually used as a preservative for other foods, like meat.

If you’ll notice, we said that natural salt without additives won’t go bad. Refined table salt (the pure white stuff you probably grew up using) will go bad. That's not because of the salt, though. It’s because of the additives. Iodine and anti-caking agents degrade over time, reducing the shelf life of processed salt to about five years.

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REAL SALT AND HIMALAYAN SALT?

These salts have slight differences in taste and big differences in geography.

Real Salt and Himalayan salts have a lot in common. Both are harvested from ancient salt deposits that were created long before there were any modern pollutants. And geologically, the Himalayan deposit is very similar to the Real Salt deposit, since they both contain a full spectrum of minerals. Both Himalayan salts and Real Salt are considered crystal salts too.

There is, however, a slight difference in flavor between the two. Real Salt is a tad sweeter, while Himalayan is a bit earthier. The biggest difference between Real Salt and Himalayan salt, though, is geography— Real Salt is mined in Utah and Himalayan salt is mined in Pakistan. That means, if you live in the U.S. (or anywhere in North America, for that matter), Real Salt is the more sustainable option, since it means less miles from mine to table.

REAL SALT FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHERE DOES REAL SALT COME FROM?

In prehistoric times, there was an inland sea covering what is now Redmond, Utah, known as Sundance Sea. That sea is gone, but it left behind a large, pristine, underground salt deposit—which is where we mine Real Salt. That's why even though our salt lives deep in the earth, it’s actually sea salt.

DOES REAL SALT HAVE THE IODINE WE NEED?

Unrefined sea salt has a small amount of natural iodine. But salt might not be the best source, even when it's iodized. Most salt producers remove any trace minerals in their salt and add enough iodine to qualify as "iodized." Redmond Real Salt is an ancient, unrefined sea salt, which means we don't add anything (including iodine) to the 60+ trace minerals nature gave our salt. How much iodine is in a serving of Real Salt? When nature created our Central Utah salt deposit, she included roughly 18-23 micrograms of naturally-occurring iodine in each ¼ teaspoon serving. That's a bit more than 10% of the Institute of Medicine's recommended daily allowance of 150 micrograms, and a lot less than artificially iodized salts. Is iodized salt the best source of iodine? No. We aren't exactly unbiased here, but your body will be much more receptive to natural sources of iodine than it is to iodized salt. If you have access to iodine-rich foods or even quality iodine supplements, we recommend those.

WHY DOES MY SALT CLUMP?

Great question! Salt is naturally hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water from the air. When grains of salt absorb enough moisture, they dissolve slightly and stick to each other. Many refined salts add anti-caking or flow agents to prevent this natural clumping reaction, but Real Salt does not have these additives. The clumps usually break up pretty easily unless they’ve been exposed to a lot of moisture. Adding uncooked rice to your salt shaker can help absorb moisture and keep the salt from clumping up. In most shakers, the salt will come out but the rice is too big to fit through the holes.

I believe the minerals in the salt have been very beneficial to the leg cramps that used to plague me. I rarely have them any more and it was a nightly occurence before I switched salt.
